Enjoy a day tour at Kylemore Abbey located in beautiful Connemara just one hour drive from Galway city. The Abbey itself was originally built in 1867 by Mitchell Henry as a romantic gift for his beloved wife Margaret and these days it was even called a castle.

From 1920 to 2010 the building was home to Benedict nuns who originally fled from Belgium and it also was a boarding school for girls lead by the nuns.

Can you imagine living and going to school at this most magnificent and peaceful place?

Nowadays vistors have the opportunity to have a look inside the Abbey and experience the Victorian atmosphere. The whole building is constructed in a neo-gothic style and gives you the impression of being in a fairy-tale castle. Every room is completely refurbished and you can learn more about the Abbey’s history and its romantic and also tragic tales.

If you wish, you can take a nice walk along the Pollacappul lake, which sometimes reflects the Abbey in the water. Or go to the nicely restored walled garden and enjoy beautiful plants, which grew in Victorian times. But that’s not it, you can also check out the small gothic church or have a look at the mausoleum where Mitchell Henry and his wife are buried.

The whole estate has about 1000 acres and is surrounded by mountains. Not far away you can have a look at the famous Twelve Bens - a mountain chain of sharp-peaked quartzite ranges. If you’d like to and if you’re well trained you can even go on a hike.

At Mitchell’s café you can have great home-cooked food, made from recipes optimized by the nuns using vegetables and herbs fresh from the walled garden.

Have an enjoyable day at this impressive romantic and spectacular peaceful site!
