What is The Gathering?

The expression “everyone’s Irish on St. Patrick’s Day” is one we all familiar with – all round the world on March 17th - people get into the festive mood with rivers and beers dyed green ,and people (and even their pets) bedecked in their finest greens in honour of the day. Irish songs are sung and perhaps even a tear or two shed for the old country. However, in 2013 with the launch of The Gathering, this expression will hold true not just for 1 day but for all 365 days! This is the year where Ireland wants to reconnect people from around the world on the island by gathering their friends, family, colleagues and sport-teams to celebrate and recognise all the great things about Ireland and what it means to be Irish.
On St. Patrick’s Day 2012 a tourism based initiative was launched to encourage people whether Irish born, with an Irish heritage / link or just indeed with an affinity with Ireland to “Gather” in the Emerald Isle. The Gathering will focus on Ireland’s heritage and culture and hopes to bring people together whether through clan gatherings/genealogical research, sports meetings, festivals or even conferencing. It is a celebration of Ireland - a mixing of her old and new and presenting Ireland to the world stage as not just a picture postcard destination but a country of multifaceted talents and a country embracing the advancement of the 21st century while remembering the achievements of the past.
To enjoy Ireland and to connect with her transcends where your people are from- the spirituality and mysticism of Ireland touches people from around the world whether it is through the words and songs of her poets, writers or musicians, her breath-taking beauty such as the wilds of Connemara or the beating of the Atlantic against the Cliffs of Moher, or through the Irish themselves – their friendliness and wit often exalted and noted as the most stand-out thing about any visit to Ireland. There is common thread that connects people to Ireland, and no Irish blood is necessary. So if you have ever downed a green beer on St. Patrick’s Day, cheered Ireland on in a sporting event, let your heart beat in time to her music or just simply feel that pull to the Emerald Isle – Gather in Ireland in 2013.
