The Emerald Isle for many seems to conjure up an image of misty mountain tops, wind-swept beaches, forty shades of green, red-haired colleens, River Dance and Guinness all infused with the wit, craic and tenacity of the locals. It seems that this small but feisty island, teetering on the very edge of Europe has somehow managed to capture the world’s imagination and respect. And for such a small place we have certainly churned out some of the world’s greatest writers, musicians, comedians, singers, actors, inventors and politicians with hardly a place on earth untouched by the 70 million or so Irish diaspora or their off-spring. Known as a friendly nation we have always welcomed the visitor to our shores – whether that visitor be Irish born, Irish descent or just a big fan of the Irish we will always extend the Céad Mile Fáilte and the opportunity to show all the very best that Ireland has to offer from the dizzying heights of the Cliffs of Moher, to the lunar landscape of the Burren, the breath-taking beauty of Kylemore Abbey or the majesty of Christ Church Cathedral we have so much to offer!
2013 is certainly no different with the launch of The Gathering which is seen as an opportunity for friends, family, work and team mates to Gather in Ireland and celebrate their connection to Ireland whatever that may be – perhaps simply a vacation, or maybe a clan gathering, sports or musical event. So if you have Ireland on your bucket list, make 2013 the year you Gather your nearest and dearest and come home to Ireland – no Irish blood needed!
With lots of events happening, here are some of the Gatherings that caught our eye…….
Dingle Walking Festival – taking place on February 16th and 17thand set amidst the beauty and majesty of the Dingle Peninsula in County Kerry this is a wonderful opportunity to explore the area and learn some of the history, geology traditions and stories of the Dingle Peninsula. Dingle itself is a bustling town with amazing restaurants and trad sessions on tap - so this Festival gives you a great chance to enjoy the area by day and by night! A must do!
24th Cork French Film Festival – enjoy all things French cinema with this successful annual festival running from March 3rd to 10th in County Cork. With a wide selection of feature and short film documentaries not to mention access to the film-makers at the Q&A screenings, Gather your mon ami, popcorn and drink and enjoy this enduring festival!
Storytelling our Great Tradition – there is no doubt that the Irish are great storytellers – listen to any of us in a pub or canteen there is always a story and a laugh. With a knack of emoting in every tale and taking the listener through a myriad of emotions, storytelling to the Irish is second nature. With this in mind the Gaiety School of Acting is launching a 3 week program for groups of up to 10 people where the participants will gather stories from around Ireland and then retell them in Smock Alley Theatre at the end of the course. So, set forth today and book your place on this once-in a life time program! Go n-eiri leat!
Grace Kelly Film and Cultural Festival – this festival will be held in Newport County Mayo, the ancestral town of Kelly’s grandfather. A celebration of her life the festival will encapsulate the beauty and magic of Kelly with exhibitions, memorabilia and several of her films being shown over the course of this 3 day festival which runs from September 13th to 15th. A wonderful opportunity to visit Newport and enjoy the magic of one of Hollywood’s most famous actresses, dress in your 1950’s best and go back in time!
Gallagher Clan Gathering – this is the second such Gathering of the Gallagher Clan to take place with the first one in 2007. Gallaghers from the United States, New Zealand and not to mention the local ones – all met in their ancestral seat of County Donegal to embrace their Gallagherness! It was a roaring success and great way to reconnect the clan which has been spread to the four corners of the earth. For the Gathering 2013 they are meeting in September for a week- long celebration, so if you have Gallagher blood in you, now is the chance to celebrate it and Gather with your people in 2013.
