Jeanie Johnston Famine Ship, Dublin City
A step aboard the Jeanie Johnston is a step towards understanding the daunting experience of the millions of people who crossed the Atlantic seeking survival and hope in the “New World” of North America. It’s to experience the fear of the unknown ahead, the flight from poverty and famine, the pain of separation from family, and the challenge of a 4,800 km (3,000 mi) voyage braving gales and harsh seas.
This replica ship was designed by Fred Walker, former Chief Naval Architect with the Maritime Museum in Greenwich, England. The recreation was modelled closely on that of the 17th Century Dutch East India ship, the ""Batavia".
Work began in 1993 and was completed in 2002. The ship is built with larch planks on oak frames, however to comply with international maritime regulations some concessions to modernity had to be made. She has two Caterpillar engines, two Caterpillar generators, an emergency generator located above the waterline in the forward deckhouse. steel water-tight bulkheads, down-flooding valves and fire-fighting equipment.
Jeanie Johnston is docked at Custom House Quay in Dublin’s city centre and is an accurate replica of the original ship which sailed between Tralee in Co. Kerry and North America between 1847 and 1855. The ship is open for visitors with guided tours being conducted daily.
A tour of the re-created Jeanie Johnston enables visitors to see what it was like on board a wooden tall ship during the Famine era. The tour will convey a deep sense of history and will to be a memorable experience for all who go on board.
