John F. Kennedy Arboretum, County Wexford
Dedicated to the memory of former President of the United States of America: John F. Kennedy, the Arboretum is home to a collection of plants, which is held in high regard internationally. Covering 252 hectares (623 acres) and located on the southern slopes and summit of Slieve Coiltia, it contains 4,500 different types of trees and shrubs collected from temperate regions all over the world and planted in botanical sequence.
There are 200 forest plots, all grouped by continent and other unique features include and Ericaceous Garden (with 500 different rhododendrons, and many varieties of azaleas and heathers), dwarf conifers, hedges, ground covers and climbing plants.
The most popular part of the Arboretum is its lake, which has also become popular with local waterfowl. Visitors can enjoy stunning views fro the summit (which is accessible by a 271m road) and the on site Visitor Centre also houses exhibitions and audio visual shows.
The Arboretum is open all year round and guided tours can be book during the months of April to September.
