Des Lavelle specializes in passenger boat services to the Skellig islands. The service is based on the picturesque island of Valentia, which is connected by both bridge and car ferry to the County Kerry mainland and to the nearby, popular Ring of Kerry route.

The Skellig Islands – renowned as a World Heritage Historical Monastic Site from the sixth century, and equally world-famous as seabird sanctuaries – stand on the horizon, a further 8 miles (12km) south west of Valentia’s Bray Head. This coast is washed by Gulf Stream waters, which create a mild, pleasant climate on land and a wealth of color and life in the sea, where - in season - gannets, puffins, razorbills, guillemots, kittiwakes, fulmars, storm petrels, manx shearwaters, seals, basking sharks and dolphins can all add an interest to the marine experience.

In summer season (April to October, inclusive), Des Lavelle runs a daily boat trip to Skellig Michael - subject to the weather and sea conditions of the moment. The departure point is Portmagee Harbour, County Kerry. The trip takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes each way, passing very close to Small Skellig and its 27,000 pairs of nesting gannets en route. Don’t forget that this is almost a ‘wilderness outing’ to an Atlantic Ocean island where there are no modern facilities. Bring food, water, sensible clothes and sensible non-slip shoes

Visiting time on Skellig Michael is normally about 2 hours 30 minutes, giving you adequate time to tour the old monastic site 200 m (656 ft) above the sea, and to admire the puffins, guillemots, razorbills, kittiwakes and fulmars nesting on the island from the end of April to the early days of August. You are normally back on the mainland by about 4:30 pm.
