Ballintubber Abbey, County Mayo
Founded in 1216 by Cathal Crovderg O' Connor, Ballintubber Abbey is an important sacred Irish historical site which will celeberate its 800 year anniversary in 2016. Ballintubber Abbey stands one mile off the main Castlebar - Galway road, 11km (7 mi) from Castlebar, 14 km (9 mi) from Ballinrobe and 63 km (39 mi) from Galway City.
Ballintubber's history dates back to pre-Christian times when people came from the east through Ballintubber on their way to the holy mountain on the west coast - now called Croagh Patrick. When St Patrick brought Christianity to Ireland in 441AD, he founded a church at Ballintubber. The present Abbey was founded in 1216 by King Cathal O'Conor. It is the only church in Ireland still in daily use that was founded by an Irish king. There is a video display and an interpretive centre at the Abbey and the grounds are landscaped to portray spiritual themes.
