Down Cathedral, County Down
Down Cathedral stands on the site of a Benedictine Monastery. It was built on the ancient hill of Down in the 12th Century in 1183 and has become a place of pilgrimage for 1500 years. Saint Patrick's remains are buried in the graveyard. A magnificent stain glass window, box pews and beautiful organ case enhances this interesting building. Souvenir shop and toilet facilities.
Guided tours are available by prior arrangement. As you enter, you will be lifted out of the strain of your preoccupation with material concern, the intrigue and expediency of political wrangling and the vain search for instant pleasure. You will be taken back to our roots, to faith in God through Christ, who alone can put life in perspective and give it true meaning and lasting satisfaction.
As such, it is first and foremost a place for meditation and worship, not only for the local congregation and the clergy and people of the Church of Ireland Diocese of Down, but for all Ireland and beyond who cherish the faith of Patrick.
