Donegal Castle, County Donegal
Donegal Castle (Caisleán Dhún na nGall in Irish) is a castle situated in the centre of Donegal town, County Donegal in the northwest of Ireland. It was built by the O’ Donnell chieftains back in the 15th Century and lies beside the River Eske. For the majority of the last two centuries, the surrounding buildings lay in ruins, however the castle itself was full restored in the late 1990s.
Today the castle is furnished throughout with Persian rugs, French tapestries and a number of informative panels, which chronicle the history of the castle owners from the O’ Donnell chieftains to the Brooke family. The castle is made up of a 15th Century rectangular keep, with a later Jacobean style wing. The entire complex is situated close to the mouth of Donegal Bay and is completely surrounded by a 17th Century boundary wall. At the entrance you can find a small gatehouse, which mirrors the overall design of the keep.
The castle is open daily from Easter – Mid September. Its opening hours are 10am – 6pm and last admission is 45 minutes before close. An average visit takes between 45 mins. And 1 hr. Unfortunately there is limited access for people with disabilities to the ground floor.
