Russborough House, County Wicklow
Russborough House is a stately house situated near the Blessington Lakes in County Wicklow, Ireland, between the towns of Blessington and Ballymore Eustace and is reputed to be the longest house in Ireland, with a frontage measuring 210 m/700 ft.
Russborough is often referred to as the most beautiful house in Ireland. It was built between 1740 and 1750 in the palladian style by Richard Castle (Cassells) and displays fine stucco ceilings by the Lafranchini brothers, marvellous plasterwork and a wonderful mahogany staircase. It has magnificent views of the Blessington Lakes and the Wicklow mountains beyond. Sir Alfred and Lady Beit bought Russborough in 1952. The House contains fine furniture, tapestries, carpets, porcelain, silver and much of the Beit Collection of fine art.
For the more energetic there are parkland walks around the estate and for the more adventurous there is a 20,000 sq. ft. beech hedge Maze to navigate (Remember to ask for the Maze Map). Newly introduced in 2011 visitors can now join an extensive self guided exhibition, which includes interactive touch screens, audio handsets, slideshow presentation, 3D photographs and cinema projection. In addition several crafts workshops can be attended at the house including a blacksmith with working forge; a weaver with working handlooms; a wood-turner and a candle maker.
