St. Michan's Medieval Church and Crypt, Dublin City
One of the oldest churches on Dublin's Northside hold's an interesting secret beneath its floors. Take a tour with the mummies of St. Michan's...
St. Michan's Church Crypt has unique properties that mean bodies do not decompose; they simply dry up and are mummified.
There are four bodies on display, their coffins also dried up and rotted away leaving the bodies in the open. You can still see their toenails, hair and skin!
The tour also takes in the coffins of Henry and John Shears, barristers executed for their role in the 1798 rebellion, as well as crypts of other families from Dublin.
While only four bodies are on display it is believed the mummification will probably affect all the bodies buried here and time will eventually offer up even more.
The tour is only about 45 mins and is best enjoyed in small groups because the crypts are small.
