Queenstown Story, Cobh Heritage Centre, Cobh, County Cork
The Queenstown Story is housed in a restored Victorian Railway station and tells the story of Cobh’s maritime history and the part which Cobh played in the history of Irish people leaving Ireland in the years 1791 to 1950, whether as convicts to Australia or as emigrants to the Americas, with the emigration stories being particularly poignant as Annie Moore - the first person to be processed in Ellis island came from the region. There is a statue just outside the centre dedicated to Annie and her two brothers, and indeed is a reminder of how some 2.5 million people left this island in the years 1848 – 1950. You can also find a similar statue in New York to commemorate all immigrants to the United States, particularly those from Ireland.
The centre houses a multimedia exhibition where you can experience life abroad the infamous Coffin Ships and learn about the Irish Wake , a unique goodbye to the emigrants leaving Ireland for a new life in the Americas or Australia.
And aside from the emigration stories, there are also displays on the Titanic, Lusitania and cruise-liner history of the port.
There is also a genealogy centre where the staff can help guide you through the myriad of various local resources and also census, church and ship records for a small fee. However, before embarking on any genealogical research it is always best to gather as much information as possible to ensure that you are focusing in on the correct information!
After so much learning – enjoy a well -earned coffee in their cafe and sample the local culinary delights!
