Scotland - Loch Lomond
Described by many as Queen of Scottish Lochs and 'Gateway to the Highlands', Loch Lomond measures 23 miles long and five miles wide, making it the single largest expanse of fresh water in Great Britain. Over 200 metres in depth, it's also Scotland’s third deepest Loch. But it's what happens on and around the water that perhaps makes the Loch most special: Wildlife, a mysterious floating island, stately homes, ruins - Loch Lomond has them all in abundance, all just waiting to be explored.
Loch Lomond is well-known for its many islands. The lake contains 30 or more islands (depending on the water level), including Inchmurrin, the largest fresh-water island in the British Isles. Several of the islands appear to be crannogs, artificial islands built in prehistoric periods. English travel writer, H.V. Morton wrote: "What a large part of Loch Lomond's beauty is due to its islands, those beautiful green tangled islands, that lie like jewels upon its surface."
Loch Lomond is famous for its breathtaking scenery, lochside locations, peace and tranquility. Situated within Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park, the first National Park in Scotland, the loch is just half an hour from Glasgow.
