Scotland - Glasgow City
Glasgow is Scotland’s largest city and is located on the River Clyde in the West Central Lowlands. The name derives itself from old English or Gaelic meaning green hollow with the first emergence of the name Glasgow dating from the early 12th century. There has been a settlement on site since prehistoric times, but it was the emergence in mediaeval times as a bishopric which created than solidified the importance of the it. This was further enhanced by the development of trading and shipping that came with the River Clyde particularly from the 15th century on. Today, it is the largest economy in Scotland.
A heady mix of the old and new there is lots to see and do in Glasgow, indeed the city has some 70 parks and is often referred to as the “dear green place”. It has a rich legacy of fine Victorian and Edwardian architecture from a period when the city was at its wealthiest. Its most noted son - Charles Rennie Mackintosh – artist, designer and architect and indeed pioneer of Art Nouveau has also left an important mark with such unique masterpieces as the Scotland Street School Museum and the Daily Record Building.
Glasgow has a vibrant arts scene that often produces ground-breaking productions and which attracts high-profile exhibitions. Visit the Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum with an impressive 8000 piece collection or the Gallery of Modern Art – the most visited modern art gallery in Scotland.
The city is also famous for her excellent shopping – check out Style Mile known for its unique designer stores or Buchanan Street, with malls at her top and tails.
