One of the highlights of Edinburgh is undoubtedly Edinburgh Castle. Sitting at one end of the Royal Mile the castle provides plenty of history and stunning views of the city to keep everyone entertained.

On display in the castle are the crown jewels. The Honors of Scotland as they are better known include a crown, a sword and a scepter. The crown alone dates back from 1540 and all three of the jewels were used together for the first time back in 1543 for the coronation of Mary Queen of Scots. Mary cried throughout the ceremony, although this had little to do with the jewels and more to do with her being only 9 months old as she became queen! The jewels are still used today and are present at the formal opening of Scottish Parliament.

The Great Hall is another highlight in the castle. It was the chief place of ceremony and state assembly from 1511. Although it was altered by Cromwell in the 1650’s it was restored in the late 1880’s and has remained intact since. The roof is one of only two remaining medieval roofs in Scotland and the stoned corbels that support the roof are the oldest Renaissance decoration in the British Isles.

Also within the grounds is the Royal Palace. In truth the Royals didn’t like staying here as it was cramped compared to some of their other residences however it was considered incredibly secure due to its strategic position.Other highlights include the 550 year old Mons Meg which is a giant cannon that was gifted to King James the 2nd around 1449. The Scottish War Memorial which commemorates those lost in the World Wars is also on site.

Aside from the amazing history the castle comes alive with major events and music festivals so make sure to check out upcoming events.
