Having been Scotland’s capital city since the 15th century and being a UNESCO World Heritage Site this great city certainly has plenty to offer. The protected buildings and magnificent architecture are only the starting point as you start to explore all that Edinburgh has available.

Like many major cities perhaps the best way to get a good idea of Edinburgh is on one of the open top bus tours that regularly go around the city. These will take you to all of the main sites and allow for plenty of exploration time.

The castle provides the centrepiece of the city and it sits wonderfully atop the extinct volcano ‘Arthur’s Seat’. Within the castle you can view the crown jewels as well as viewing one of the Royal’s most secure dwellings over the last number of centuries. From the castle there are panoramic views of the whole city and beyond with clear days offering a glimpse of Ben Lomand.

The castle is at the top of the Royal Mile and after discovering all of the castle’s history a stroll down the Royal Mile to Holyrood Palace is ideal. The mile features an eclectic mix of lovely little shops and restaurants for visitors to enjoy. At the bottom of the mile The Palace of Holyroodhouse stands. The palace is the official Scottish residence of the British Monarch. The palace hosts state ceremonies and official entertainment particularly in the one week each year (at the beginning of summer) when the Queen is in residence there.

For those looking for even more in Royal treatment you can experience what life as a Queen was like on the seas. The Royal Yacht Britannia which housed the Royals for over 40 years and travelled over a million miles worldwide is now open to the public and has received rave reviews. You can tour the boat and also get to experience the Royal Deck tea room which has beautiful views back over Edinburgh.

Anyone looking for a bit more excitement won’t be found wanting either. The Edinburgh Fringe Festival is touted as the world’s largest comedy festival and completely takes over the city. Top international acts come and perform and the carnival atmosphere is legendary. The Castle also hosts various concerts too. Even when there is no big events on there are plenty of restaurants and lively bars to keep you entertained throughout the night.
