Located close to the tourist town of Ennis, this fantastic castle dates back from 1467 when it was built by Sean MacNamara. It is a perfect example of a medieval tower house. Through the years the castle changed hands between the MacNamara’s and local settlers until it wound up in the possession of a local farmer. By 1966 it had fallen into disrepair. Fortunately an American couple stepped in and with the support of the Shannon Development scheme had the castle restored. In 1996 the castle was bought from the Americans by the Shannon Development scheme with the goal of preserving it and enabling people to come and enjoy all that it had to offer.

Within the castle there is plenty to explore and enjoy including the great dining hall which comes alive each evening with their traditional banquets.

After exploring the castle its on to the walled garden outside. Set over 1.76 acres the gardens were opened back in 1817. The walls over 4 metres high and allow for people to escape and enjoy the tranquillity. There are beautiful climbing roses, grapevines and fig trees to enjoy. Three of the corners feature gently rounded walls which facilitates fruit growing. This remains an important feature today as the castle still grows its own herbs for their banquets.
