Sligo county is situated in Ireland’s northwest, and its main town – Sligo is one of Ireland’s largest towns. Like most of the west of Ireland, Sligo enjoys breath-taking coastal scenery – with cliffs, mountains and beaches all shaped by the wilds of the Atlantic, accompanied by rolling green hills, mystical woodlands and memorising beaches, all with the dramatic backdrop of Benbulben, one of Ireland’s most famous hills. Travelling in Sligo, one can rarely escape from the Yeats connection, with Sligo often called “Yeats Country”. It is very easy to see why Sligo made such an impression on Yeats – it is a truly a captivating county and no doubt as your travel her winding roads his words will ring out to you, perhaps no- where clearer than with a boat-cruise on Lough Gill, where you can pass and view the Isle of Innisfree, “There midnight’s all a glimmer, and noon a purple glow”. Boat trips around Lough Gill leave beside the 17th century restored Parke’s Castle – well worth a visit to as well!

Sligo town just over 8 km from Lough Gill is a bustling town with a great traditional music reputation. It has a plethora of shops, café, restaurants and pubs so there are lots of dining and entertainment options to choose from. Culture is aplenty too with Sligo Abbey dating from 1253 located in the town, the Yeats memorial building which houses the Yeats Society and the Sligo Art Gallery and the Sligo County Museum with William Yeats memorabilia and paintings by Jack B. Yeats. Don’t forget to pose with Yeat’s statue, just off Hyde Bridge! His gravestone is in Drumcliffe cemetery just outside of the town with the epitaph he penned “Cast a cold eye on life, on death. Horsemen pass by” still evident today. In the cemetery there is also a high cross and an old monastic site.

There are some 5,000 archaeological sites in the county, so make sure to include the megalithic sites of Carrowkeel and Carrowmore into your itinerary as well!

Sligo is a wonderful county to explore – discover your own treasures as she reveals her beauty and magic to you inch by inch mile by mile and winds into your memories and heart.
