Foynes Flying Boat Museum, County Limerick
The Foynes Flying Boat Museum, housed in the original terminal building in Foynes, recalls that nostalgic era when Foynes became the centre of the aviation world from 1937 to 1945. Foyne's amazing story is told through a comprehensive range of exhibits and graphic illustrations featured throughout the original Terminal Building including in our authentic 1940's cinema; the Radio and Weather Rooms—complete with transmitters, receivers and Morse code equipment; the Brendan O'Regan restaurant and of course, the only full sized replica B314 flying boat.
Foynes and Flying Boats will be forever connected with the Irish Coffee as they combined to give us this uniquely Irish treat and, as with anything in Ireland, the weather played a key role: Late one night in the winter of 1943 a flight departed Foynes for Botwood, Newfoundland. After flying for several hours in bad weather conditions, the Captain made the decision to return to Foynes and await better conditions. Staff were contacted to return to work and when the flight landed the passangers were brought to the Airport Restaurant for food and drink to warm them. When Joe, the chef, was asked to prepare something warm for the passengers, he decided to put some good Irish Whiskey into their coffees. One of the passengers approached the Chef and thanked him for the wonderful coffee. He asked Joe did he use Brazilian Coffee? Joe jokingly answered, "No that was Irish Coffee!!" A few weeks later, Chef Joe Sheridan showed Brendan (the owner of the restaurant) this new drink in a stemmed glass and asked him "How about that for eye appeal". Brendan answered "Genius Chef" and so began Irish Coffee. Irish Coffee continued to be served at Foynes to all passengers and is still served to this day to all dignitaries arriving at Shannon Airport.
