Crumlin Road Gaol, the only Victorian era prison remaining in Northern Ireland, dates back to 1845 and only closed its doors as a working prison in 1996. During its history an estimated 25,000 prisoners were kept imprisoned, 17 executions took place within its walls, several prisoners escaped despite high security standards and 15 bodies are still interred in unmarked graves within the grounds of the Gaol.

Today visitors can take a guided tour of the prison and hear about the history of the site from when women and children were held within its walls through to the political segregation of republican and loyalist prisoners. It is recommended to pre book tickets.

A qualified tour guide will take you to all aspects of the Gaol from the Tunnel linking the courthouse on the other side of the Crumlin Road, to the Hanging Cell, the Historic Holding Cells, Governor’s Office, Centre Circle, C-Wing, Hospital and Graveyard.

Since the Crumlin Road Gaol is one of the most haunted buildings in Belfast, it also offers a series of Ghost Hunt's where attendants will be guided by experts in the field of Paranormal Activity and get the chance to use professional equipment in the gaol’s most active areas.
