Hidden in the very heart of Dublin City, lay the Iveagh Gardens. They definitely are amongst the finest and least known of Dublin's parks and gardens but even locals do not always know how to find them or are even aware of their existence.
They are just south of St. Stephen's Green and the easiest access is via Harcourt Street and the short Clonmel Street. A small sign next to a gate indicates the way.

The gardens in their present form were laid out in 1863 byBenjamin Guinnessafter he had built what is nowIveagh HouseonSt. Stephen's Green – the much bigger but also much more crowded park area just up the road. Iveagh Gardens demonstrated the artistic skills of the landscape Architect of the mid 19th century and display a unique collection of landscape features which include Rustic Grotto's and Cascade, sunken formal panels of lawn with Fountain Centre Pieces, Wilderness, Woodlands, Maze, Rosarium, American Garden, Archery Grounds, Rockeries and Rooteries. During the early 19th century the gardens were opened to the public and are nowadays host for more and more events – especially concerts.

The Gardens could be described as a smallish, landscaped park in an enclosed area - made more interesting by some old trees, a sunken archery range, fountains and the remnants of some monumental artworks. Gods lurk in the foliage. The overall impression of all those little features is very pleasing and the secluded nature makes the gardens ideal for a "breather". For some visitors the back of the Georgian buildings are an attraction of their own - spot multiple-level additions and typical period details.

Park Gates are open daily between 8am – 4pm.
