Please note: Guildhall will be closed until 2013 to carry out necessary renovation works.

Located on land reclaimed from the River Foyle, Guildhall is a beautiful building just outside the wall of Derry City. The building dates back to 1887, originally costing £19,000 ($31,500) and was officially opened in 1890 as an administrative centre for the Londonderry Corporation.

The building was badly damaged by fire in 1908 with only the clock tower remaining, but following this the entire building was re-built and renovated, opening once again in 1912. Guildhall now houses the Mayor’s Office and council chamber.

The Guildhall suffered further damage in 1972 after a series of bomb attacks, but once again was carefully restored and reopened in 1978.

This stunning red sandstone building features neo-gothic architecture, with subtle hints of the Tudor era shining through. The interior of the building houses the most eloquent stained glass windows – some of the finest in Ireland and during the restoration process many of they were recreated using the original watercolour designs.

Monthly Council Meetings are held at the Guildhall along with occasional musical recitals. It is also used during major seasonal celebration, such as turning on the lights at Christmas and in November 1995 it was the setting for the stage when former President of America Bill Clinton visited the city.
