Clare Island, County Mayo
Clare Island is a mountainous island in the Clew Bay, north Connemara, in County Mayo. The island provides many activities for nature lovers, such as bird watching, specifically sea birds, but you can also enjoy a hillwalking in this wild nature, matching spectacular cliffs and breath-taking hills. It is also possible to do a biking trip in around the island.
For history buffs, it is possible to do a Clew Bay Archaeological trail, the tour passes by Clare Island and its beautiful Abbey that is said to date from the mid-13th century, so that you can enjoy the magnificent paintings on the ceiling and the walls that are among the finest examples of medieval paintings in Ireland. Another monument is Clare Island Tower House dating from the sixteenth century.
As the island has only 130 inhabitants, there is only one shop, so don’t forget to bring a packed lunch if you are going on a day trip to Clare Island!
How to get there: the Boat crossing takes about 20 minutes from Louisburhgh. On the summer, there are many ferries going to Clare Island, but in the winter, there are usually only two.
