Dursey Island (Irish: Oileán Baoi (Yellow Island)) is a 6.5 km long and 1.5 km wide rugged island at the tip of Beara Island in West Cork. Home to only a few permanent residents this enchanting island guarantees solitude, peace and tranquillity. However you should be aware that there are no pubs, shops or restaurant on this charming little place so be prepared to fully enjoy your undisturbed walks. There is a possibility to stay in Dursey Island though, as several of the traditional cottages have been restored as holiday homes.

The island is separated from the mainland by a narrow stretch of water called Dursey Sound. The Dursey Sound is infamous for having strong tides that make travelling by boat hazardous.
Consequently this remote island is home to Ireland’s only cable car. It travels 250 m above sea level and is therefore one of the few cable cars which crosses over sea in Europe. The journey in the little cabins, which can carry either 6 people or one large animal, takes about 10 minutes.

This scenic island has few trees due to the continued wind exposure and wild salt spray. There is a stark and appealing beauty about this peaceful island with its rugged indented coastline, cliffs and open bogs that make it an ideal place to escape to.

Furthermore the landscape is dotted with relics of the past ranging from standing stones, the ruins of an early Christian monastic and a signal tower from the Napoleonic era. The remains of the three villages on the island can also be explored. The most stunning view you will experience at Dursley Head is at the furthest tip of the island. There are three little islands located off the headland: The Bull, The Cow and the Calf, where the ruins of a lighthouse can still be seen.

Dursey Island is also a paradise for birdwatchers as rare seabirds nest here. The waters surrounding Dursey Island are home to dolphins, seals, whales and the rare plankton feeding basking shark
