Achill Island, County Mayo is the largest island off the coast of Ireland. Throughout the centuries this charming island has retained its striking natural beauty. The windswept location has given way to a most spectacular topography of tall sea cliffs, bare mountains, untamed bogs and sweeping sandy beaches.

Keem Bay near Dooagh village is one of the most picturesque bays in Ireland. The sandy Blue Flag beach is ideal for skipping into the water on a hot summer day or for a nice walk. It is easy accessible by road, so take your time to visit this enchanting beach.

In former times Keem Beach was a main base for basking shark fishing, but the number of them declined drastically. Still you might be lucky to see one of these gentle giants. Recently it has become quite popular as a surfing location, but otherwise it is virtually unoccupied. Or go to the Keel Lake for surfing lessons. This swallow, central fresh-water lake is the perfect venue to learn or develop kite surfing skills as it benefits from the strong sea winds.

For fishing enthusiasts the vast Atlantic waters around Achill provide one of the best sea angling grounds in Europe. For outdoor lovers Achill Islands offers a wide variety of activity like kayaking, horse-back riding, hiking, bicycling and more. If the weather is horrible you can also immerge into the deep history of this place with many attractions to choose from.

At the base of the Slievemore Mountain (672 m/ 2200 ft) lays a mysterious village, known as the Deserted Village. It is unknown why it was abandoned, but it was used as a booley( a place where people lived in the summer to let their cattle graze) before that. However, the desertion is perfect to learn about the agricultural methods of the past. Guided tours with experts from the Achill Archaeological Field School can be provided.
