Loop Head is a mistranslation of the Irish name Ceann Léime, meaning "Leap Head”. It is a languet and the westernmost point of County Clare. This stunning peninsula was described by Jacques Cousteau, the famous marine filmmaker and undersea explorer, to be the best diving spot in Europa.
Loop head is the perfect embodiment of the Wild Atlantic way with its abundant local sea life, majestic cliffs with overwhelming panoramic views and tranquil spots, where you can let your mind wander. It is now wonder that is was crowned “Best Place to Holiday in Ireland” by The Irish Times in 2013.

Loop Head is marked by a prominent lighthouse, which is 23 m high. There were lighthouses before that but the one you can visit nowadays started in 1854. Guided tours are offered, where you can learn more about the history and importance of this place. The view from the lighthouse is absolutely worth the admission. On clear days you can see the Connemara Mountains in the north, Aran Islands in County Galway and the Blasket Islands in front of the Kerry Coast.

Slightly to the north of the headland stands the impressive marine stack called Lovers’ Leap. It is also known as Diarmuid and Gráinne’s Rock, after the famous Irish legend “The Pursuit of Diarmuid and Gráinne”.

In 2012 Loop Head became a European Destination of Excellence in Aquatic –Tourism, acknowledging the rich sea around this picturesque headland. The mouth of Shannon is one of the best places in Ireland to see Basking Sharks, but whales, dolphins and seals can also be spotted. Fishing is still an important industry on the peninsula, but also a fun pastime for guests visiting this scenic place.
